Scientific Name: Saxifraga Stolonifera Common Name: Creeping Saxifrage, Strawberry Begonia
Begonias are beloved houseplants, primarily famous for their incredibly unique foliage variations and variegations, from polka dots to fuzzy (or spiky!) leaves. Begonias tend to be slightly high-maintenance, and are generally considered to be a little more advanced of a houseplant, but don't let that stop you from trying!
Strawberry Begonia is named for its dainty, round leaves, originally hailing from Eastern Asia, Western China, and Japan. You can find this charming variety on shady cliffs and mossy rocks at low elevations in nature. Its genus comes from the Latin words saxum, which means rock, and frangere, which means to break. This is because the plant likes to grow in the cracks of rocks and eventually chips away at them. It's perfect for indoor hanging baskets!
Basic Needs: Bright, indirect light. Does not like to be soaking wet, but also cannot handle being dry for extended periods of time. We recommend small, but frequent waterings. PRO TIP: to grow a more evenly bushy begonia, rotate your pot every week so a different side is exposed to light-- this will encourage more even growth from all sides!
