Cactus, Queen of the Night
Scientific Name: Epiphyllum oxypetalum
Common Names: Queen of the Night Cactus, Princess of the Night, Dutchman's Pipe
The Queen of the Night Cactus is an epiphytic (meaning it grows on trees or rocks in its natural habitat) tropical cactus that is native to Mexico. This is a fragrant, night-blooming cactus and its blooms wilt before daylight when it is in a blooming cycle.
Because the Queen of the Night Cactus is a tropical cactus, it has flattened leaves as it loves humidity and water, and doesn't need to be able to store water like its desert-dwelling friends. Its growth pattern is reminiscent of the Fishbone Cactus or Christmas Cactus. These are a great trailing plant for a hanging basket or bookshelf.
Fun fact: These are propagations from our massive (very old) Queen of the Night that lives in our greenhouse full-time!
Basic Care: This tropical cactus is different from desert varieties and can tolerate lower light conditions and also enjoys and appreciates humidity. Watering is more similar to a regular tropical houseplant, and you can water when the top two inches of soil are dry, as opposed to waiting for the soil to be bone dry as with other cacti.
