Scientific Name: Ctenanthe burle marxii
Common Names: Fishbone Prayer Plant, Burle Marx Ctenanthe, Prayer Plant, Never Never Plant

The Ctenanthe looks a lot like its cousins, the Maranta and Calathea. This is because they are all in the Marantacaeae family of "prayer plants". These often get confused for the Maranta, as their leaves look very similar, and they both close their leaves in the evening and open them up in the morning (a la "prayer").

Ctenanthe are native to Brazil, and the name Burle Marx is in honor of famous landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. He was known not only for landscape architecture, but also for fighting for the conservation of Brazilian rainforests. Over 50 plants bear his name either honorarily or because he discovered them himself.

The Burle Marx Ctenanthe has a fishbone pattern on oblong oval leaves that will mound or trail as the plant matures. The leaves will close up in the evening naturally, but if you notice that mature leaves are staying closed up or furled, your plant is probably unhappy and might need some extra attention.

Basic Care Notes: Loves lots of indirect bright light, but can tolerate medium light (sometimes). These need consistent moisture, and don't like to dry out completely in between waterings. Ideally, the soil stays evenly moist, but do not oversaturate the soil as they are prone to root rot and don't love "wet feet". Humidity is also preferred but not required, and occasional misting would make your Ctenanthe happy.

***Due to the unique nature of plants, the one we carefully choose for you won't look exactly like the photos. but it will be just as beautiful!
